A: The 1890 Federal Census of the United States of America was largely destroyed by a fire in 1921 in the Commerce building where it was being held. Although only twenty-five percent of the census was actually destroyed by the fire itself, more than 50 percent of the remaining records were destroyed by water and smoke damage. This made the census nearly useless for governmental purposes at the time, and the records were ordered to be destroyed around 1935.
